Matthijs Welle has been chosen as the best tech entrepreneur in the Netherlands, with the greatest societal and economic impact.

Amsterdam, May 10, 2023 – Matthijs Welle, the Dutch CEO and founder of innovative tech scaleup Mews, has been named the winner of the LET Award 2023. The award was introduced by Techleap.nl and is the successor to the prestigious LOEY Award. The LET award was created to stimulate tech entrepreneurship in the Netherlands. The award was presented during the BOLD event on May 9, where hundreds of Dutch tech entrepreneurs gathered.

Matthijs Welle founded Mews in 2013 with Richard Valtr to transform the hotel industry through cloud solutions. Over 3,500 hotels in 65 countries use Mews’ services, which now has over 750 employees. In late 2022, Mews raised a whopping €185 million in investment.

The scaleup has achieved impressive results in a short period of time. Matthijs Welle has proven himself to be a true game-changer and is an example for future entrepreneurs.

The Jury on Matthijs Welle

“Now more than ever, scaleups are proving that they not only have economic success, but also unleash enormous added value in society with smart solutions for major challenges. Welle symbolizes the strong promise of tech entrepreneurship in the Netherlands. Precisely because of his commitment to ecosystem growth, his vision for innovation, and his ability to inspire others, Welle is without a doubt the winner of the LET Award 2023,” said Corinne Vigreux, co-founder of TomTom. Together with Valentijn Bras and Job van der Voort (winner of the LOEY Award in 2022 and CEO of Remote), she formed the jury of the LET Award 2023.

“It’s an honor to be nominated for the Leading Entrepreneur in Tech of Techleap.nl,” said Matthijs Welle, CEO of Mews. “Mews is a scaleup with the Dutch market at the heart of its global activities. I am happy to be recognized for this. I hope that building a company like Mews inspires many entrepreneurs to take the step towards creating something new and innovative that has a positive impact.”

From LOEY to LET Award

The LET Award from Techleap.nl continues the tradition of the LOEY Award. Previous winners of the LOEY Award include Thomas Plantenga (Vinted), Joris Beckers (PicNic), Adriaan Mol (Mollie), and Steven Schuurman (Elastic).

With the LET Award, the focus has shifted from online entrepreneurship to tech entrepreneurship. Ambitious entrepreneurs with a strongly growing and innovative scaleup, where technology is at the core of the company, are eligible for the LET Award. The winner is also a role model and source of inspiration for others within the ecosystem.
